VDP
Software
Producing
an effective VDP document requires you to have the
right software. There is an array of vendors that produce
variable data software. These cost of these programs
range from $1,800-$100,000. However, many of the inexpensive
programs will still produce effective one-to-one marketing
campaigns and other variable applications. Keep in
mind that some of these inexpensive programs require
more manual labor than the upper models. Several of
the low-end programs function as plug-ins to Adobe
InDesign and Quark 6 while others are stand-alone programs.
Some of the primary vendors of VDP software applications
are XMPie, Creo, PageFlex, Meadows Publishing, and
Atlas. FLAAR is currently researching and conducting
tests on software from XMPie, Creo and the HP software,
Yours Truly Designer. FLAAR will be issuing a report
on the software shortly. Below are highlights of a
selected group of software packages.

XMPie
recently launched uDirect, a plug-in to Adobe InDesign
for both Mac and PC computers. This program allows
creative professionals to develop variable data
documents with ease. It features a WYSIWYG preview
that allows the designer to avoid costly mistakes
in production. XMPie uDirect can output to several
different languages such as PPML, PPML/VDX, VIPP,
and PDF. Finally, uDirect files can be exported
to any other XMPie product. |

Darwin, produced by Creo, is stand
alone program as well as a plug-in to Quark and InDesign
on Mac. This program allows you to produce variable
charts and graphs that are ideal for financial statements.
Furthermore, Darwin outputs only to a Creo Spire
RIP that is sold separately. |

HP developed proprietary software called Yours
Truly Designer. This program is used by several companies
that own Indigos and is a plug-in to Quark 6. Yours
Truly can only output to the HP Indigo, but allows
you to have more control over the imposition of your
document. |
